As I write this, I’m currently on a train heading southbound. I spent the last six days in Rhode Island with my mom and two sisters. We’re now headed back to Virginia. My dad was originally from Rhode Island, and after he passed, we spread his ashes here. The area we stayed in is called Narragansett. It’s right on the coast, near Block Island. This morning it was so clear, we could see Block Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Montauk from the beach.

The last time the four of us were together was last year for my uncle’s memorial service. It was held in New Hampshire. Currently, none of us live in New England, but I think my oldest sister and her husband plan to retire to either Maine or New Hampshire. She and her family currently live in Philadelphia. The rest of us are in Virginia.

The house we rented was adorable, with the beach only a two minute walk away. Since it was after Labor Day, unfortunately the shops nearby had closed already for the season. My oldest sister drove, she had to leave a couple of days early, but while she was with us, we could use her car. Our cousins live in Massachusetts though, and picked us up for lunch after she left.

It’s been good to get away with my mom and sisters. Our days have been full of cups of tea, talking, knitting, reading, writing, and long walks on the beach. This trip, and every one before it, only remind me of how much I love New England. It’s still uncertain where I’ll settle down once I retire, but New England is on the list.

I’m working on a lacework knit vest. Once I put my laptop away, I’ll try and knit a bit on the train. I’ve finished the left and right fronts, and still need to finish off the back, join the shoulders, do the neck and armhole ribbing, and the button band. Sadly, I think I’ll need to get more yarn. Hopefully, the dye lot I’m using is still available at the craft store by me.

Now back home and only days away form the end of the month, I have finished the vest I mentioned above. Other than that, my days have been mainly filled with marching band stuff, and work. Yesterday, I also managed to transplant the purple heart plant from last month’s post, and a bunch of daffodil bulbs. Time will tell if the purple heart plant survives the winter. Fingers crossed.

See you next month!
